Democracy and Participation in School

Students have the right to be involved in decisions that affect them. They must be heard, and their opinions must be taken into account, regardless of their age and level of maturity.

Description

One of the school's responsibilities is to teach students what democracy means in practice. Children also have an independent right to be heard and to express their opinions. Schools must therefore provide students with information in a way that allows them to form their own opinions. Through discussions, the school must ensure that students have the opportunity to express their views. While all students have the right to speak freely, they are not obligated to say anything if they do not wish to.

The school does not need parental consent to speak with students.

To ensure genuine participation, the school will provide information to students in a way that is adapted to their age, level of maturity, language, and cultural background.

Student Council
In addition to expressing their opinions individually, students can participate in organized forms of involvement, such as the student council. Through the student council, students can influence matters related to the school environment, the quality of education, and school regulations. The student council represents the interests of all students.

Parental Involvement
Parents of primary and lower secondary school students can participate in the Parent Council (FAU), the School Environment Committee, and the Cooperation Committee. The Parent Council is elected by the parents.

Both students and parents must have the opportunity to contribute to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of school activities, including efforts to improve the school environment, the quality of education, and school rules.

Acts

This is a legally mandated responsibility for schools and a right for students and parents. See in particular
Opplæringslova § 10-2, § 10-4 og § 10-5.
